What Is Impetigo And How Is It Treated?
By Ryan Neil Johnson

Impetigo is a condition where the skin gets affected due to a bacterial infection. is highly infectious and usually affects children between 3 to 6 years of age. The onset of the infection can be diagnosed by the appearance of small red blisters around the mouth and nose which later break out and form a crusty yellowish layer on the affected area. In some cases (Bullous Impetigo) the fluid filled blisters may be larger in size and may take a longer time to break open. can be classified into three types based on the observed symptoms. They are Bullous Impetigo, Non Bullous and Ecthyma.

An infection normally occurs when staph bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureus penetrates into the system through a breakage in the skin. The breakage can be due to wounds or insect bites or anything that punctures or weakens the skin. The bacteria then tries to damage the protein binding between the skin cells and eventually spreads to other parts of the body. One can also acquire by coming into a person with the condition ______continued.

In some extreme cases can lead to severe complications such as PSGN or lead to other staph infections such as Cellulitis and MRSA. PSGN is a condition in which the infection causes a kidney inflammation. PSGN occurs when the tiny structures that help filter waste out of the kidney get damaged due to the infection.

To treat either oral antibiotics or bacterial ointments may be used depending on the condition and severity of the infection. Usually if the infection is mild and not serious or life threatening doctors would recommend certain bactericidal ointments to be applied on the affected areas. However if the infection is severe or deadly oral antibiotics may be recommended instead.

Taking care of cuts and wounds properly , keeping nails trim and clean, not mixing an infected person's linen with other family members clothes, and covering skin sores of an infected person properly are some ways in which one can prevent an infection.
