Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Many of us don’t even think of our skin as an organ. Worse yet day after day it is exposed to a host of pollutants and toxins and we do little more than wash it in the shower. Read on to learn how to protect your skin.

The very first thing you need to do is drink lots of water. 10 glasses a day is a minimum. Since the skin is made up largely of water the more water you drink the more hydrated your skin will be. It will allow it to flush toxins easier and you will have younger and healthier looking skin.

You also need to eat at least 4 to 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit every day to nourish the skin and keep it healthy. Of course and overall healthy diet is also essential and not just for the skin but for all your organs.

You need to make sure you are getting the correct vitamins to keep your skin healthy. Vitamin A is essential to healthy skin, so if your skin is rough or dry or prone to acne increase your vitamin A intake. Vitamins B and C are also very important as is iron and iodine.

Vitamin B1 keeps your circulation functioning normally and promotes healthy skin. Vitamin B2 will stop the development of liver spots on the skin and will reduce the oil in your skin. Vitamin B6 will help dermatitis or eczema, and niacin will stop the brown pigmentation spots that appear on face and arms.

The best way to know you are getting adequate vitamins and minerals is to take a good multivitamin every day.

Use a gentle cleanser on your skin and use an exfoliator on your entire body at least once a week. Exfoliating helps remove the dry dead skin. The top layer of our skin is dead and by helping slough it off are skin looks more radiant and healthy. Never mind looks healthier, it is healthier!

You should also moisturize every day. People with oily skin tend to think they don’t need moisture and people with dry skin tend to use too much of the wrong moisturizer.

If you have oily skin you need to understand the moisture is not oil so moisturizing will not cause you to break out unless you use an oily moisturizer. If you have dry skin slathering on a bunch of moisturizer may help a bit but there is a technique to use to get the most of your moisturizer no mater what type of skin you have.

Your skin needs moisture but when we apply lotion it isn’t the lotion that provides the moisture. Rather the lotion traps moisture or water between the skin and the moisturizer so that it can nourish the skin. So the best way to maximize your moisturizers effect is to apply it to damp skin. This will trap the most amount of moisture for your skin to use.

Protect your skin from the sun. By now we should all know how dangerous the sun can be. UVB rays will cause you to burn and UVA rays if the exposure is too high can cause you to develop melanoma the most serious form of skin cancer.

For the sun worshippers no amount of preaching about the risks will matter, the ultimate golden tan is like a junkies fix. And I can relate! But that doesn’t mean you can’t tan safely by using the right protection on your skin.

Did you know when your skin turns that beautiful brown we call a tan it is actually the skin trying to protect itself from exposure to unhealthy levels of UV rays? Even if you never burn you should always apply at least a 4 sunscreen. This will help block the dangerous rays and still let you tan.

If you are fair skinned, burn easily, or have no interest in damaging your skin choose a higher SPF like a 30 to protect your skin. You can also use a sunblock which does not allow any of the suns rays’ through.
